Can Water Damage Tile Roof?

Can Water Damage Tile Roof

Roof damage is often associated with severe storms, but even constant, heavy rain can cause roof damage without severe winds or cyclonic conditions.

Roof damage caused by heavy rain

The condition of your roof is the first factor that will determine the damage caused by heavy rain. If your roof is in good condition and there are no minor damage points (such as cracked tiles), a heavy downpour will probably not cause any damage. However, heavy rain can cause more damage if your roof has multiple problems.

Cracked tiles

Heavy rainfall and cracked tiles do not mix. We have discussed this in previous blogs. Cracked tiles can allow rain to seep in and leak into your home, causing water damage. Excessive water flowing through gaps and cracks in your tiles will also cause the tiles to deteriorate.

It’s important to note that tiles can withstand water damage when they are sealed and intact. Water or cracks in your tiles can lead to progressive weakening and damage. Your tiles may rot from the inside, causing them to break and become a hazard during severe weather conditions.

Roof Design/Architecture

This could also be a vulnerability where heavy rain could cause damage. A poorly designed roof is more likely to sustain damage, although the average person may not be able to identify the issue. A roof that inverts can cause small pools of water to accumulate.

If your metal or tiles are damaged (such as rusting or cracking), a pool of standing water on your roof could weaken it. Weak roof frames in your home can also be affected by the weight of the pooled water, leading to sagging or damage to the framing. Damaged roof frames will impact the overall rigidity of your roof.

Gutters

Regularly maintaining your gutters is crucial. Debris like twigs, dirt, and leaves can clog up your gutters, hindering water flow and causing blockages in the downpipes, especially during heavy rains.

Even if it’s just the edges, clogged gutters can lead to water buildup, which may seep back into the roofing if there are any existing damages or leaks. Dealing with water backups can worsen the situation. By maintaining your gutters, you reduce the likelihood of water buildup in your roof and prevent water from running down your walls.
